What sounded like a wine glass, crashed against the ceiling below her.
“Jesus,” Sharla muttered, getting off her bed; “the Republic” was still in her hand, with one finger in the book so she wouldn’t lose her place. She opened the door to her room and quickly glanced down the dusty wooden steps, but – not to her surprise – she didn’t see anything because her landlords were most likely in the kitchen.

The two of us sat there lost in our own thoughts for a moment. We were sitting on a short wall that sectioned off the sidewalk from the downtown law school. I was chiseling off my “Carrot-Top Jam” nail polish with my teeth and thumbnail, and reapplying a sparkly blue shade. Jake was chewing on peeling of the orange he had just devoured.
